Buhari Seeks Senate Approval of New Retirement Age for Teachers

President Muhammadu Buhari has submitted the ‘Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2020’ to the Senate.

The Executive Bill seeks to, among other things, review upwards the retirement age for teachers in the country from 60 to 65 years, with the mandatory years of service to be reviewed upwards to 40 from 35.

Galaxy’s Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that this request by Buhari was read on the floor of the Senate Wednesday at plenary by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

The new bill which seeks to increase the retirement age of teachers across the country was in January approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) subject to its enactment into law by the National Assembly.

Following the submission of the Bill by President Buhari, the process of its passage has commenced.
