The Police have declared that Amotekun, vigilante groups, hunters’ associations and other non-state security formations have no role in election security. Therefore, they have been barred from election duty in the Osun State Governorship Election on Saturday.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, in a statement, indicated that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against violence, intimidation, vote buying, ballot snatching and other electoral offences.

The Police maintained that election security remains the responsibility of constitutionally recognized security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, NSCDC, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service and FRSC.

The Force said the joint security deployment will cover all 30 Local Government Areas of Osun State, including polling units, collation centres, electoral materials, officials, observers, journalists and voters.

The Police also warned against the possession of firearms and dangerous weapons around polling units and collation centres, except by accredited security personnel on election duty.

The Inspector-General directed all personnel deployed for the election to remain professional, impartial and firm while respecting human rights and the rule of law.

The Force assured residents and other stakeholders of adequate security to ensure a peaceful election and allow eligible voters to exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.
