Edo poly staff demands 65yrs retirement , arrears

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic from Edo state Polytechnic, Usen, have protested to the state ministry of Education in Iyaro demanding the immediate implementation of retirement age of 65 years.
 
They also called on the state government to offset their six months unpaid salary arrears and recall their members who were retired abruptly at the age of 60 years.
 
The entrance of the state ministry of education was this morning sealed up by lecturers of Edo state Polytechnic Usen, they staged a protest to demand action from government to resolve some of the setbacks affecting them and their colleagues. 
 
The chairman ASUP –USEN, Edobor Sunday, who led others in the protest, said the policy of retirement has caused some of their members their job. They demanded the immediate reinstatement, payment of their six months arrears, among others.
 
Some other protesters who spoke demanded for the regularization of appointment of staff that had put in seven years and above. 
 
They also demanded the review of the institution governing council which pegged the retirement age of lecturers at 60 years.
 
Addressing the protesters, the permanent secretary, ministry of Education, Musa Ikoredo, commended their peaceful protest while assuring that their issues will be looked at by the appropriate authority.
 
Meanwhile, the protests which lasted for more than an hour had the presence of security operatives who were on ground to ensure their protection before they later dispersed.
