Reps Hold Public Hearing On Online Gaming Bill

The Speaker House of Representatives Hon Abbas Tajudeen says the house is working to strengthen regulations on online and remote gaming through the proposed Central Gaming Bill.

Speaking during a public hearing on the bill which seeks to repeal the National Lottery Act of 2005 and its 2017 amendment, the Speaker, represented by Hon. Patrick Umoh, emphasized that the bill aims to boost revenue, promote responsible gaming, and align the sector with international standards.

The chairman house committee on intergovernmental affairs, Hon. Chukwugozie Nwachukwu stressed the importance of stakeholder input in shaping effective legislation. Olajide Boladuro, Director General of the Oyo State Gaming and Lottery Board, questioned the National Assembly’s authority over the bill, citing a Supreme Court ruling.

Permanent secretary ministry of special duties and intergovernmental affairs Dr. Onwusoro Ihemelandu and the national commissioner Nigeria data protection Dr. Vincent Olatunji praised the bill’s provisions but highlighted the need for a dedicated regulatory ministry. As discussions continue, the bill aims to close regulatory gaps and create a more structured gaming environment in Nigeria
