President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, justified the Electoral Act 2026, dismissing opposition criticism as a disservice to Nigerians.

At the APC 4th Elective National Convention, President Tinubu said the law followed due process, including public hearings, before its final passage by the National Assembly.

He contended that while criticism is welcomed, persistent attacks on the Act were misplaced, because it, reflected Nigeria’s resolve to strengthen its electoral system and deepen democracy.

The President reaffirmed commitment to credible elections, the rule of law and electoral integrity. Tinubu rejected claims that APC is pushing a one-party system.

The President emphasized that democracy thrives on healthy competition and a credible opposition that can challenge and refine government policies.

He described the convention as pivotal, urging party members to remain united and disciplined. He warned that internal divisions could weaken the party.

The President also called on members to uphold the APC founding ideals of justice, development and inclusive governance. He paid tribute to late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Earlier, Convention Committee Chairman, Aminu Bello Masari, said the party remains focused on building a stronger and more equitable Nigeria despite current challenges. APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, made a strong case for greater female representation. He said that women’s sub-five per cent presence in the National Assembly is unacceptable.

The convention affirmed ward, local government and state congresses conducted recently by the party.
