Screen INEC Chairman Designate Now, IPAC Tells Senate

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called on the Nigerian Senate to speedily reconvene to screen and confirm Prof. Mahmood Yakubu's nomination as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

IPAC also claimed that some elements were working towards frustrating the screening of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as INEC chairman.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, IPAC Chairman  Leonard Nzenwa, warned against heating up the polity, saying that it would not serve the nation any good.

Dr Nzenwa said Nigerians have the right to question, complain, investigate, query activities of INEC and Prof. Yakubu’s tenure but also advised that such should be done in a proper manner.

He also described as fake news the report by an online media platform alleging that the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan received the sum of $2 billion from Prof Mahmood to aid his appointment.

Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has denied a news report linking him with a purported collection of N2 billion bribe from Prof Mahmood Yakubu to facilitate the confirmation of his second term appointment as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said the concerted write up was meant to smear his image and that of the Nigerian Senate.
