Bayelsa CP Warns Against Abuse of Social Media

The Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, CP Daniel Iyamah, has warned social media against posts that are capable of heating up the polity and causing unrest.

The Bayelsa police commissioner, in a statement, pointed out false alarm arising from a Facebook post by one Promise Etete, stating that "MILITANTS SEIZE BANDITS, DEMAND N50 MILLION RANSOM PER CAPTIVE IN BAYELSA STATE".

According to the police, the misleading post caused widespread panic, which resulted in parents rushing to schools in Ogbuna and other parts of the state to pick their wards.

The Commissioner of Police personally deployed and led operational assets, including school protection squad and the drone unit to the rumoured areas for on-the-spot assessment and restoration of order in the Ijaw National Academy, among others.

Normalcy have since returned to the areas, as the commissioner urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and avoid sharing information capable of causing panic, while advising citizens to rely only on official communication channels for security updates.
