2026 Menstrual Hygiene Day: Women Professionals Call On Schools In Benue For Safe Spaces
Women Professionals from Medical Women Association ,in collaboration with Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, NBA Women Forum and other female professional groups, have advised young adolescent Girls to maintain proper hygiene during their menstrual period, use clean sanitary products and seek adequate information when necessary in order to maintain a healthy life style.
President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Benue State Chapter, Dr. Doofan Ayatse-Ageshi, stated this while marking 2026 Menstrual Hygiene Day in some schools in Makurdi.
Highlighting the importance of menstrual hygiene management and girls' empowerment, she urged young adolescent girls not to be ashamed of menstruation, explained that it is a natural biological process.
The Chairperson of NAWOJ, Benue State Chapter, Comrade Elizabeth Achagh, noted that menstrual hygiene is essential to the health and confidence of adolescent Girls, she called for provision of safe spaces and water especially in schools to promote proper hygiene practices and also called for greater support from parents, their male counterparts and communities.
While State Lead, NBA Women Forum Mary AGOGO-AMARA, charged the students to maintain high standards of hygiene and dispose of used pads properly to safeguard their health as she called on the boys to support their female counterpart to be confident of themselves even during menstruation.
The event took place at Aliyu Mohammad Jama'a Memorial Arabic College, UBE Holy Ghost and UBEC all in Wadata, as well as the UBE College Ichwa, in Makurdi, which featured health education sessions, interactive discussions and the distribution of sanitary pads to support girls in managing their menstrual health with dignity.
The students expressed appreciation to the group for the knowledge gained, saying it would help them manage their menstrual health better.
