Reps Extends 2025 Budget Implementation By Three Months
The House of Representatives has approved a three-month extension for the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act.
The approval followed an emergency sitting convened to consider a request from the Executive, seeking an extension of the June 30, 2026, deadline for the execution of capital projects contained in the budget.
The amendment bill was read for the first time and passed through all legislative stages under accelerated consideration.
Leading the debate, House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, said the extension became necessary due to procurement delays, administrative bottlenecks and other implementation challenges affecting project execution.
He noted that the additional time would help complete ongoing projects and prevent the abandonment of critical infrastructure across the country.
After consideration at the Committee of Supply, the House approved the extension through a clause-by-clause review of the bill.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, lost a member in the House as Abubakar Mohammed, representing Funtua/Dandume Federal Constituency of Katsina State, defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The lawmaker attributed his decision to prevailing political circumstances.
The Speaker also announced changes in the leadership of some standing committees of the House.
Former Minority Leader, Ali Madaki, was named Chairman of the House Committee on special duties while former Deputy Minority Leader, Ali Isa, was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on shipper council.
Pascal Agbodike emerged Chairman of the House Committee on the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, SMEDAN; while Kelechi Nwogu was named Chairman of the House Committee on the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, N-HYPPADEC.
Plenary sessions are expected to resume on July 7, 2026.
