Court Stops Planned Impeachment of Zamfara Deputy Governor

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an order of interim injunction restraining the Zamfara State House of Assembly, the State governor, and the State Chief Judge from the planned impeachment of Zamfara Deputy governor, Aliyu Mahdi Mohammed.

Recall that the Deputy Governor had remained with the People's Democratic Party PDP despite the defection of Governor Bello Matawalle to the APC.

The Court also restrained the defendants from denying the deputy governor of the rights and privileges of his office pending hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Galaxy's Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that the PDP which is a plaintiff in the suit approached the court with an exparte application.

The plaintiff noted that it fielded the candidates that emerged winners of the Zamfara State general election and as such entitled to hold the elective positions.

The PDP is therefore alleging that the defendants are interfering with its legal rights and plan to accord recognition to the APC adjudged to have not fielded any candidate for the said election.

Other defendants in the suit are the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, APC, the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
